Ask Lorie

December 2007

Question:

Dear Lorie, I am so depressed I am on medication for depression and anxiety. Most of this is caused from my weight. I have been over weight for about 35 years. I have lost weight so many times I have lost count. A few times I have even managed to reach my goal. The last time was 2 years ago only to regain it all back! I feel I am truly addicted to food. The problem is I can't totally stay away from food as other addictions. I just can't seem to overcome the ups and downs of my weight.. I am now struggling to relose the weight and have lost 25 lbs. I've joined a gym and I go at least 3-5 times a week. I'm a vegetarian. Which surprise most people because they don't expect Vegetarian's to be obese. Oh, did I mention my weight before I started this last "diet" was 251 lbs. I'm 54 year old female. Is my issues a mental illness? Is there any advice you can give me?

My Response:

De... First of all any addiction is a way for us to avoid dealing with or feeling certain emotions. Wether it started because of your weight or because of past experiences or circumstances. Depression and anxiety medication will help you cope for the short term but will not address the true reason for what you are feeling. Therefore, in some capacity you will continue to feel depressed and unhappy because ultimately nothing is actually being solved. On the physical side...you may truely have some imbalances that are not working in your favor creating more emotional distress. In turn making it very difficult for you to lose weight and keep it off. On a positive note it sounds like you are getting exercise and watching what you eat. Even though vegitarians have to be careful of getting the right nutrients in order not to create deficencies in the body. My opionon is that you take steps to get off this roller coaster ride. The CEDSA Testing will give you valuable information that will help you move forward both physically and emotionally.
